Artist Profile

Aphras Cat

Since the summer of 2006 this female-fronted Indie rock trio has been clawing its way to the top. Strutting through the clubs and pubs of Melbourne, Aphra's Cat are rapidly gaining notoriety for their soaring harmonies, primal drums, filthy guitars and patent leather stilettos.

Aphra's Cat are an unabashed melange of soda-pop melodies and manic screams, of crystal-clear guitar leads and discordant riffs. Aphra's Cat are the sounds that surface when The Breeders start having Siamese Dreams about Gold Lions growling through a Victrola.

Inspired by seventeenth century poet, Aphra Behn, the first recognised female poet in England, Aphra's Cat lyrics are evocative and distort the fragile line between the imaginary and the real.

Having met on the unlikely stages of musical theatre, it was inevitable that their thespian tendencies would surface in their live shows. Aphra's Cat deliver explosive rockoigraphy, aided by their signature glam-rock face painted whiskers. Their high-energy live shows have included appearances at Ding Dong, Pony, the ESPY, the Evelyn, Old Bar, Eurotrash and the Noise Bar, to name a few.

The trio launched their long-awaited EP, 1640, at Pony nightclub in Melbourne on Friday 26th October. The five-track EP includes the single Fade.

Aphra's Cat are part of L.A. rock compilation Riot on Sunset Volume 7, have made an appearance on Noise TV and have been a part of the growing Poptarts phenomenon.

So come along to a show and see if this kitten can't make you purr.
