Artist Profile

Colin Hopkins Trio

Studying performance and composition under Tony Gould he graduated from the VCA in 1983. Colin's passionate interest in the interrelationship between form, structure and emotional expression led him to further studies in architecture at Melbourne University. His architectural work continues to inform his compositional style and approach to the piano. Travelling throughout Europe in the 1990s performing and recording, his Jazz/Folk release, Kyaka Sun, features German acoustic bassist Johannes Schadlich, saxophonist Phil Drummy and Puerto Rican percussionist Freddie Santiago. This was the first Australian led ensemble to appear at both the Omsk Summer Festival (Siberia) and the Tallin Jazz Festival (Estonia).

Colin has worked with a broad range of prominent musicians including: David Jones, Tommy Emmanuel, Graeme Lyall, Michelle Nicolle, David Beck, Peter Knight, Shelly Scown, Ronny Ferella, Lisa Young, Ben Robertson, Christine Sullivan, Brian Brown, Martin Breeze, Alison Wedding, Tony Gould, Belinda Moody, Anita Wardell, John Hoffman and James Morrison. He was an influential member Eugene Balls contemporary jazz sextet Donut, the Cam MacAlister Quintet, and Unlokked with saxophonist Lachlan Davidson. Colins own trio, Paper Hat, features drummer Andrew Gander and bassist, Frank DiSario performing free improvisations and original compositions combining elements of jazz, classical and folk music. The project recorded for Jim McLeods ABC Jazztrack, was released through Rufus Records. Colins most recent work, a solo album of meditations on simplicity Still, is also on the Rufus label. He will be a featured artist on the 2007 ABC release of Jazztrack's 30 the Anniversary celebrating excellence in Australian jazz.
