Emma Dean

Music became the most obvious career move for me at the age of three when my mother was told that my bum was too big to be a ballerina. This shattered my dreams of dancing Swan Lake and The Nutcracker alongside Australias best-known tinkle toes. A few years later, while at my new alternative dance school I played the role of Edith (the fatty with glasses) in a very contemporary version of Picnic At Hanging Rock. Needless to say that not long after, I quit to pursue my career in music.

I love the art of song writing, and this is what I immerse myself in. Comparisons to Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell, Fiona Apple and many more have been made but I like to still think that I have a sound of my own. Whatever that may be. I have studied classical and jazz music in singing, violin and piano and I feel that this influences my music greatly. I write from personal experience and try not to let anything get in the way of a good story.

My music is piano based and I play with an amazing band comprising beautiful musicians John Turnbull (bass guitar), Dane Pollock (guitar) and Anthony Dean (drums). I also spent two years as the violinist and backing vocalist for the amazing Kate Miller-Heidke band!
