Artist Profile

Goodnight Thomas

As a teenager, Nick spent most of his nights locked away in his parent’s bungalow. There, he was just seeking a little peace from the busy world outside. One night, for no particular reason, he started to sing.
By 2002 the road to the stage had begun, with the formation of an acoustic duo that soon grew to become an acoustic trio. After a period of regular gigging, that outfit seemed to have run its course and dissolved. Then Nick met Jen Cloher.

In late 2005, Nick asked Cloher's band 'The Endless Sea' to jam with him and see how his once acoustic songs would pan out in full band form. It became clear that the fruits of these efforts needed to be captured on some recordings, so the planning for Nick’s EP ‘Close’ began. Soon after this Ross Calia joined the process and, so taken by the music, agreed to produce the EP.

During the recording process, Nick unearthed the musicians that now form the band 'Goodnight Thomas'. One by one, these beautiful players fell into place. Chris first, through a mutual friend and soon after that, Oliver and bass were discovered. The final elements of David on his drums, Sarah on her violin and Nat on her vibraphone then simply materialised.

These talented players now present Nick’s songs on stage with the same intimate dynamism that he wrote them in. Doing the rounds in the cosy music venues of Melbourne, the band has also had the privilege of sharing the stage with some wonderful acts like Heather Frahn, Tobias Cummings and Chrono Karma.

So the future looks bright for Nick and his band of song stylists. A film clip for close your eyes is about to be completed and a regional tour of Victoria to promote the EP later this year is in the planning. In the meantime, you'll naturally be able to catch these guys around old Melbourne town. With music that’s been well received by many, including the great musicians they’ve been fortunate enough to share the stage with, these guys will be a band to keep your eye on.

The debut EP ‘Close’ is now available through The Last Record Store (304 Smith St, Collingwood) and online through Cumbersome Records (www.cumbersome.net)
