Artist Profile

Nick Huggins

I have a band with Mark Gretton. we are a duo and we are called 'A City Asleep'. We have a myspace site which is not surprising because there are more myspace sites than there are types of cheese. many more. We are currently working on an album of songs and instrumentals, recorded mostly live, with minimal overdubs in an effort to keep things simple.

I'm a music maker from Melbourne Australia. I find it hard to put my musical thoughts and desires and definitions into a neat paragraph. I think thats because music for me and every other noise fascinated person has become everything and you can't put everything down to a few neat lines. I don't know why it becomes so easily enveloping, but clearly we are all well addicted. What a great thing that is.
I want music to be everything and I aim to make pure and wonderful music at least once before the end of my life. I mean that its a process i'm working on everyday.
There are lots of distractions but thats all a part of it.

When I listen to new music I want to be surprised, a turn of the chord structure or a texture that twists itself and I go all hypercolour in the head. Thats what i'm hoping for and that's what I chase in making music. I want to feel the strongest distillment of something. In terms of activities, I've spend the last couple of years recording and producing a series of albums by Whitley, Samuel Marcus, Hazel Brown, Seagull, Xave Brown, Eva Popov and others. I have a little studio by the beach.

In between those projects and some soundtracks and some kids music, I am working like a squirrel before winter on a batch of my own solo recordings. The four songs here make up part of the as yet unreleased Shipwreck EP. All my previous releases have been handmade CD-r editions (also downloadable from my website). I'm not sure yet how this one will be released. Maybe i'll leave them all on a train and see where they end up, like those people do with books. Send them off into the sunset.
